Some people prefer working in groups and some people prefer working alone. In the real world however there will come a time when both are necessary. People often get caught up only working one way and this results in your strength becoming a weakness. Here’s some quick ideas on when it’s right to get others involved, and when to work alone.
When is it productive and necessary to work as a group ?
- When working on concepts, ideas, business plans;
- Anything that requires a lot of decisions and idea generation, or impacts/involves a lot of people.
Trying to work on something that requires a lot of input from other people, or trying to solve everything yourself will only slow you down. For each type of work one needs to decide what kind of collaboration is necessary. It may be one other person to bounce ideas off of each other or a group of executives that are able to make a project move forward. Once decisions, ideas and answers are created then it becomes easier to do the hard grafting on your own.
- When a lot of research is required, and it would be difficult to discuss without some though;
- When you have all the answers and just need to record or collect it together.
So, working individually is best at the beginning and the end of a piece of work, when you need to get together the initial questions, concepts and understanding for yourself. Once you address these in a group, one can then work individually again with the necessary input and information to do so.
Avoid doing group work when there isn’t enough information to go on, even where decisions need to be made and ideas generated, you need enough information to go on to do so. On the other hand, avoid isolating your work, as you never know what someone else has experienced or knows that could influence your piece of work. It’s very easy to get into the trap of over talking an idea and or over working it.
